Checking procedures of the EUROCARE-4 Data Base

Checking individual data fields.

The values in each data field must be a valid value. For almost all variables, accepted codes are given in the EUROCARE-4  protocol. Topography and morphology are checked versus corresponding ICDO-3 listed in the WHO year 2000 publication. This list is provided for reference separately for topography (Site ICDO3.xls) and morphology (Morphology ICDO3.xls) )

Consistency checks between different data fields

Checks on combinations of different data fields concern:

•    Consistency between dates of birth, diagnosis and follow-up
•    Site-morphology combination are first checked according to the standard criteria published in IARC Technical Report No. 42 (1). Then a list of further EUROCARE criteria, described in Table 1, is considered.
•    Age-site, age-morphology, sex-site, and sex-morphology unlikely combinations are the same listed in the abovementioned IARC Technical Report No. 42.

Table 1. Unlikely site-morphology combinations flagged by EUROCARE checking procedures in addition to unlikely combinations checks applied by  IARC routines (1)

(*) Morphological family number as reported in IARC Report (1)

The complete list of unlikely site-morphology combinations for all morphology families (IARC morphology families.xls) included in IARC routines (1) is given here for reference (Site-morphology checks.xls). The checks added in the EUROCARE study, and listed in Table 1, are highlighted in red.

The different types of errors (or warnings) resulting from the application of the check procedures are coded and listed here (Error and Warning codes).
